An unexploded WW2 bomb was discovered in Old Calton Graveyard on the 3rd June. Police had been called to the are as youths were setting off fireworks. As they searched the area they discovered the bomb.
The area was evacuated and the area closed off while experts from the army bomb disposal unit assessed and disposed of the bomb.
A controlled detonation was done to disarm the explosive. A statement by the police confirmed the discovery and that the area is now safe to return to though part of the graveyard will be closed off while repairs are undertaken.
It was Found half buried in one of the mausoleums in the graveyard. Experts believe that the increased traffic in the area over the years has been enough to bring it closer to the surface and the decay of the mausoleum has allowed it to break through.
