False Missing Person Reports Increase

Police Scotland have issued a report saying the number of false missing person reports has sharply increased over the past year.

A lot of these are from abusive partners who are looking to find their victims.  Charities who help victims of domestic abuse including Women’s Aid have called upon police to increase scrutiny of missing persons reports and to work with charities and individuals to create a secure database that can help them identify false claims.

Police Scotland has also said that they will start being less lenient in cases of false reports and seek higher levels of punishment to discourage the practice.
