How to… Toreador

A guide and refresher on Clan Toreador

How to use this guide

This guide is to give an overview of standard and general knowledge of the clan. This is by no means a definitive guide nor an enforced how to.

However, these are all things that should be considered for those that are looking to play this clan. Even if your character is a trendsetter seeking to break the clan mold you still need to be aware of the basic structure your character is flouting.

Who are the Toreador?

The Toreador of modern nights are the Artists, the creator, the diva, the writer and the model. They are also the gossip, the schemer and the political assassin. Children of the Toreador are chosen for their abilities and talent.

What makes a Toreador?

This Clan consists of artists; performers, art lovers, critics and beautiful people. Sensitive and personal, they devote their unlives to the perfection of their art. Toreadors are an essential part of the Camarilla, and are often one of the first Clans the Prince consults when politics and intrigue are moving against him. With a few notable exceptions the Toreador shun physical combat and prefer to immerse themselves in the endless controversy and political manoeuvrings that are inherent in Kindred society. They rate themselves above all other Clans and have a particular distaste for the Nosferatu. They see Mortals as being the most complex and interesting things, and many have strong ties to the Mortal world.

The Toreador have two main camps:

  • Artists: People with real talent.
  • Poseurs: People who are nice to look at.

The Clan disciplines are Auspex, Celerity and Presence.

The Clan Flaw

All Toreador suffer from a fascination; a topic or theme that grabs and holds their attention utterly when encountered. Pick a particular theme, such as “The stars” or “Surrealism”. Any media which touches on your chosen theme will capture your attention, causing you to be enraptured and find it incredibly difficult if not impossible to focus on anything else, including the building being on fire or someone sawing your head off.

Other works of art will still capture your attention, even if you happen to dislike them, but won’t hold your attention quite so solidly as something relating to your chosen theme. Chosen theme must have some way to be interpreted as beauty to the character.

Due to their Clan Flaw, many a young member of the Toreador finds death at the hands of the sunrise (often described as the most beautiful thing in the world, and not good for a Vampires health).

Internal Clan Structure

Respect is very important to the Toreador. Age and talent often decree your standing within the clan, however this can be a fickle position to hold. Maintaining one’s reputation within the clan and your standing therin requires constant rebuttal against the sharp words of fellow clanmates looking for your position.

If a Toreador is able to accumulate sufficient age and renown they will often find they can employ hopeful hangers on to maintain their standing for them. The word of others carries more weight for your reputation than your own.

What do they think of others?

Typically, the Toreador do not get along well with the Nosferatu Clan, and they will take every opportunity to belittle and undermine them.

They tend to respect Clan Venture as a fellow ‘civilised’ clan. The same goes for Clan Malkavian as they often provide great sources of inspiration and fascination.

The Brujah and the Gangrel Clans tend to be looked down upon as uncouth ruffians. It is acknowledge that there are exceptions to the clans but for the most part they are regarded as destructive and uncultured brutes

Like most other clans, they have a healthy distrust of the secretive Tremere Clan, but at the same time, a healthy respect for a clan that can throw lightning and fireballs around.

Most Toreador will choose sect over clan but the word and influence of a powerful Toreador can often sway this opinion.

Clan Specific Merits and Flaws

Merits:

Blasé: [3pts] Provides immunity to Presence levels 1 and level 2 “fear” calls from the Presence discipline, but not “Advanced Fear” calls.

Greater Colours: [2pt] You may glean more information out of an Aura check. Rather than simply learning your target’s emotion, you may ask a single simple question about their current state, such as “Who is your anger directed at?” or “How intense is your emotion?”. This merit will, however, also make you more susceptible to entrancement when viewing physical media – regardless of whether the media suits your specific Toreador theme or not.

Flaws:

The following Merits and flaws cannot be taken by a toreador:

Recommended Skills and Backgrounds

Toreador Ties

Even someone as simple as your sire can help you get started on influencing your clan’s opinions.

Art, Society and Media ties

With their artistic stereotype, Toreador often have some form of connection to the Arts industry

Appraise

The ability to determine the value of something and identify possible flaws is a valuable skill

Artistic Expression

The ability to create is what separates the artists from the posers and can be just about anything.

A Final Note

This guide is meant to describe the typical Toreador. As stated at the start, that does not prevent you from playing a member of this clan with a different base concept, but you will need to have a good reason in your history why your sire chose you to join the clan.

In addition, if you heavily deviate from a typical clan member be prepared to face ridicule or being shunned from the rest of the clan.
